Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out had essentially no chance of displaying Web pages correctly, and they quickly passed out of use. The 256-color systems became the order of the day; many of these systems are still in use.

A video card that contains 8 bits of memory for each pixel can display 28, or 256, colors at once. A video card that contains 24 bits of memory for each pixel can display 224, or 16,777,216, colors at once.

Nowadays, of course, video systems that display all 16,777,216 colors are common. They typically go by the name of 24-bit color, 32-bit color, or True Color. If you know that all your visitors or at least the overwhelming majority of them have such video cards, you can use any colors you want and ignore the issue of safe colors. Otherwise, the safe choice is to opti; mize your color selections for visitors with 8-bit displays. An 8-bit video card can display 16,777,216 different colors, but only 256 at a time. This isn t a problem when you re displaying a single Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) picture, because most programs tell the video system to display the same 256 colors that appear in the picture. However, three problems arise when you re displaying pictures on a Web page:

Windows-based computers, for example, 20 colors are reserved for use by Windows so that window borders, menu bars, button faces, and other elements of the user interface maintain a consistent appearance. This leaves only 236 colors that can be adjusted to match those in a picture.

256 colors, but two pictures on the same page if they have no colors in common can require a total of 512. Three pictures can require 768 colors, and so forth. This pre; sents a problem if the display hardware can accommodate only 256 colors in total.

256 colors: up to 16,777,216 (but no more than one per pixel, of course). A 256-color system has no hope of rendering such a picture accurately. Most browsers solve this dilemma by programming 256-color displays with a fixed 216-color palette. The 216 colors are all combinations of six evenly spaced intensity levels of red, the same six levels of green, and the same six levels of blue. Table 18-2 shows these six levels. These are the only colors you can be sure browsers will display as you intended, and for this reason those 216 are commonly called the browser-safe colors. To display colors with RGB intensities other than 0, 51, 102, 153, 204, or 255, the browser either dithers or substitutes. When dithering, the browser displays nonstandard colors as a mixed pattern of standard-color pixels. In theory, the viewer s eye perceives the mixed pattern as a smooth area, but in practice, the perception is often grainy. Dithering usually works better on continuous-scale pictures, such as photographs. It s most objectionable on pictures with large solid areas, such as text, flood fills, and line art.
